China Manufacturing Cluster Research Notes

Manufacturing clusters can concentrate materials, specialized processes, tooling, labor, testing services, and logistics. Cluster research can improve supplier discovery, but a company’s address is not evidence that it owns the required equipment or operates a factory.

Research method

  1. Define the product by material and process, not only retail name.
  2. Identify the upstream components and specialist operations that control cost or quality.
  3. Compare multiple evidence sources: trade-fair directories, industry associations, official local industry publications, company records, logistics patterns, and supplier interviews.
  4. Record where the legal entity, sales office, factory, warehouse, subcontractors, and export entity are located.
  5. Verify site capability through technical evidence and, where risk warrants, an on-site audit.

Questions for a claimed cluster supplier

  • Which processes are performed at this exact address?
  • Which inputs are purchased locally and from whom?
  • Which process is subcontracted outside the site?
  • What is the normal lead time for critical material?
  • Which equipment creates the critical product characteristic?
  • How are outsourced lots identified, inspected, and approved?

How to use the finding

Use a cluster hypothesis to build a broader longlist, plan efficient visits, and understand cost structure. Do not use it to skip identity checks, sample validation, capacity review, or quality controls.

Havemoon will expand this research format by product category as primary-source and on-the-ground evidence is collected. Until then, these notes deliberately avoid publishing unsupported “best city” rankings.
